Values

Mike Acler

This is se set of my values and beliefs about working with organizations, people and building products.

Organization

  • Core belief: Empowered individuals → Efficient teams → Long-lasting orgs
  • Hire the best people you can and get out of their way
  • Seek for ownership, accountability and high-agency
    • I want to own that thing and be responsible for all decisions made
    • I am prepared to be accountable for good and bad things
    • I do it because I believe in your dream and I am motivated enough to do the best work I can
  • Give people problems and let them to figure it out on their own
    • I am experienced enough to (usually) know what to do, I don't need a set of tasks, checklist or someone to babysit me to check on progress
  • Offer freedom & trust people
  • Live no-BS culture with low bureaucracy
  • Flat structure where everyone is approachable
  • Everyone working towards the same goal

Team

  • No egoes
  • A-players
  • Love the craft
    • Pay attention to the tiniest details
    • Push it [craft, industry] forward
    • Never settle
  • High quality bar
  • Aware it's a team sport
    • respect others
    • always be prepared
    • set good expectations
    • save people's time
  • Strong opinions, loosely held
  • Question everything, especially status quo
  • Go the extra mile
  • Inspire and teach others
  • Have added value for everyone involved
    • There should be something extra for you or the team when you join together for a work (experience, unique skill, view…).
  • Never lie

Building

  • Good-enough > perfect
  • Fast > anything
    • Fast decisions: we don't need another week to "think something through" when the options are clear
    • Is it good-enough? Ship it, then improve (and repeat)
    • Ask for forgiveness > ask for permission
  • Working > talking
  • Show > tell
  • Ask for forgiveness > ask for permission
  • You are not the user
  • It's never done
  • Iteration is the default
  • Outcomes over outputs
    • You should know what moves the needle.
    • With AI is easy to produce slop but did it actually helped to achieve what you want?
  • Less is more
    • always strive for the simplest solution possible: simple design, simple architecture and code; we should solve the complexity for the people
    • simple things work better than complicated ones; this include products, teams or companies
    • but being simpler doesn't automatically mean reaching it is easier or faster
  • Smaller is better
    • smaller teams ship faster
    • AI-native teams move 100x faster
  • Average is not an option
    • Thanks to AI, everyone can deliver average work
    • To stand out and success, you need to have high bar and standards
    • You believe you should put out world-class quality products
  • Roles don't matter
  • Best products are defined by what's not included in them.
    • Saying "no" more often than "yes" is key in the process

Believs & behaviours

  • Progress & growth, or die
    • what is not moving, will eventually die Everything today must be better than yesterday: organization, people, product
  • The only constant is change, be flexible
    • Everything might and will change over time on a micro and macro level
    • To survive, you need to be adaptable
  • Bias towards action
    • Can we do it now? let's do it!
  • Playtime is useful as work time
    • This is the safe space where you will try new stuff / probably fail and learn
  • Failure is part of the process
    • Innovation requires failures
  • Have fun
    • We're here for the marathon, not a sprint.
    • You genuinely have to love what you do and have fun doing it.
    • Fun keeps you in the game way longer than you ever would have been otherwise.
    • And people can't compete with someone who is having fun
    • And also for be fun to work with for your mates
